Relax on the River Severn in Shrewsbury
Did you know that there are 9 bridges in Shrewsbury, 680 listed buildings, Sloppesberie and Schrosberie are past names for the town and Lord Michael Heseltine, Nick Owen & Sir Michael Palin all went to Shrewsbury school. These are just some of the interesting facts you can hear about whilst taking a relaxing trip on the Sabrina boat in Shrewsbury which runs along the River Severn between the Welsh & English bridges.
Making the most of an unexpected PD day from school and after changeovers were complete, Nell and I decided to treat ourselves to an afternoon in Shrewsbury , the gorgeous county town of Shropshire and just 20 miles from Sambrook Manor cottages. We parked on Frankwell car park next to the Theatre Severn which is just s short stroll to the Welsh bridge and where we waited to board The Sabrina, which runs 7 days a week on the hour from 11am to 4pm. Once on board we ordered drinks and a delicious slice of cake which was served to our table on the top deck for us to enjoy and take in the scenery as we sailed down to the English Bridge.
On the way back up the river we had an amusing and informative commentary from the skipper who pointed out places of interest and we learned why the friars in Shrewsbury wore grey tunics, hence part of the town being called greyfriars, where Charles Darwin skipped off school and started to discover his theories of evolution and many other fact about Shrewsbury I didn’t know before – everyday is a school day even when you have been given the day off.
A very relaxing way to see and hear about many of the fascinating sights in Shrewsbury and an enjoyable trip for all ages.
